Awareness/Reflection
What?
…happened?
I logged the amount of trash I threw away/recycled for one week. I also noted the material of each item and what it was exactly used for, as well as where it should have gone and how long it would have taken to decompose.
…was my role in the situation?
I was the data collector in this situation as well as the infographic designer.
…was I trying to achieve/understand?
I was trying to understand how much trash I go through in a single week, as well as what it was used for.
…action did I take?
Over the course of the week, as I was being more conscious of what I was throwing away and how I was using these items, which led me to try to think more sustainably about what I am using and where it is going.
…were the consequences?
The consequences of what I threw away and where I put it, ended up being that a lot of what I threw away will take longer than 10 years to decompose, when most of it could have been recycled and then decomposed in less than 10 years.
So what?
…did I base my actions on?
I based my actions on what types of garbage disposal methods I had a the time I was needing to throw something away.
…should I have done?
I should have been more conscious of what garbage I was disposing of and where it was going.
…other knowledge can I bring?
I can bring knowledge of where different garbage items I use everyday should go as well as how long they may take to break down and decompose, whether it be in the landfill or recycling.
…is my new understanding of what has occurred?
My new understanding is how long items in landfills vs recycling take to decompose.
…other broader issues have arisen?
Broader issues that have arisen from this is that I am going to look into local recycling in my area because a lot of the items I threw away in the garbage could have been recycled.
Now what?
…do I need to do to improve the situation/prevent recurrence?
I need to look into a recycling system in my area so I can throw less of my trash in the landfill.
…are the broader issues that need to be considered if new action is to be successful?
The broader issues that needs to be considered if this new action is to be successful is if the recycling facility is not curbside pickup or in walking distance to my home, then how will I transport my items? A car? If so, then that will cause some pollution which could have other implications on the environment over time.
…might the consequences be?
The consequences of me looking into recycling could be none if it is curbside pickup and the truck is already out picking up cans nearby.
…can I do to transfer this learning to other contexts?
I can look into other efforts that I can take to lessen my trash amount, such as reusing items more than once.
